What WhatsApp Business API Pricing Now Costs a Gym

October 18, 2026

6 min read

On 1 October Meta started charging South African businesses for the replies they send on WhatsApp's business platform. Worked through for a 200-member gym, the new charges come to about R112 a month. The broadcasts cost more than ten times that, and they always did.

If your gym's WhatsApp messages go out through software, a CRM, a booking system or an automated class reminder, the number almost certainly sits on Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, and WhatsApp Business API pricing changed under it on 1 October 2026. Meta now charges for the replies you send to members who message you first, once a number has sent 1 000 of them in a month. It also charges for utility templates sent inside those conversations, which had been free since July 2025.

South African coverage in August called it the end of WhatsApp's free lunch. Meta has since published the rates, and for most gyms the new charge is small. The expensive messages were already on the bill. One part of the change can stop your replies from being delivered at all, and that part is worth checking this week.

What changed

Two kinds of message stopped being free

Meta has charged per message since 1 July 2025, according to its pricing page for the WhatsApp Business Platform. Every message a business sends falls into one of five categories: marketing, utility, authentication, service and Meta Business Agent. Messages from the member to you are never charged, and Meta bills a message only once it is delivered.

Templates are the pre-approved formats you can send at any time: a promotion is marketing, a class reminder or a receipt is utility, a login code is authentication. Everything else is a plain message, a line of text, a photo or a voice note, and you can only send one inside a 24-hour customer service window that opens, and resets, each time the member messages you. Meta counts those plain replies as service messages, whether a person types them or a third-party bot sends them.

On 1 October 2026 Meta started charging again for two things it had made free. Service messages, free since November 2024, are charged once a number passes its monthly allowance. Utility templates sent as a reply inside an open window, free since July 2025, are charged from the first one.

1 000 Free service replies per business phone number each month. Meta charges for every reply after that, and the unused allowance does not roll over, according to its WhatsApp Business Platform pricing page, updated 30 September 2026.

Meta also raised South Africa's utility and authentication rates on the same day. Its rate card, effective 1 October 2026, now reads as below. The rand figures use R16,43 to the dollar, worked out from the European Central Bank's reference rates for 16 October 2026.

When TechCentral reported the change on 19 August, Meta had not yet published a South African rate, and the 12c a reply going around locally was an industry estimate. The utility rate quoted in Briefly News, US$0,0076, was the July card. The October card is 25% higher.

Until 30 September

A reply to a member who wrote first 0c
A class reminder (utility template) 12c

From 1 October

A reply, after the first 1 000 in a month 16c
A class reminder (utility template) 16c

The rule that can stop your replies

Meta's page is specific about one failure. If a messaging account has no payment method on file, Meta keeps delivering service messages until the free 1 000 are used, and then stops delivering them. From the 1 001st reply that month, a member asks a question and your answer does not arrive. If a provider connected your number, it probably holds the billing. If you connected the number yourself, check that there is a card on the account before the month gets busy.

The worked example

What WhatsApp Business API pricing does to a 200-member gym

Suppose a 200-member gym runs all its WhatsApp through a CRM. In a month it sends 1 400 replies to members and leads who wrote in first, 1 600 class reminders as utility templates, and four promotional broadcasts to a list of 500. These volumes are assumptions for illustration, not measurements from a real gym.

Class reminders1 600R200R250
Broadcasts2 000R1 246R1 246
MonthR1 446R1 558

The October change adds about R112 a month to this gym's bill. The first 1 000 replies cost nothing, so only 400 are charged, and the reminders were already a paid message before October. The rate rise adds R50 across all 1 600 of them.

The broadcasts are four-fifths of the bill, and they cost the same before October. A marketing message to a South African number costs four times what a reminder or a charged reply costs. Meta's card has no volume discount on marketing at all, and its utility discount only starts above 100 000 messages a month, which no independent gym will reach.

Four broadcasts to 500 people cost this gym R1 246 a month. Every reply the new rules charged for came to R62.

A bot uses the allowance faster

Replies from a third-party bot are service messages, so they draw on the same 1 000. A bot that answers in three short messages uses the allowance three times as fast as a person who answers in one. Meta's own AI, Meta Business Agent, is billed per token instead, at about 4 to 5 US cents a message by Meta's estimate. That is roughly 66c to 82c, with no free allowance, so each of its replies costs more than a marketing message.

This week

Five checks before October's bill arrives

01

Find out which WhatsApp you are on

The per-message charges apply to Meta's Business Platform, the API that software sends through. The WhatsApp Business app on a phone is not billed this way. If software sends for you, ask your provider whose Meta account the number sits on, who pays Meta, and whether that account has a payment method.

02

Ask for October's count by category

Marketing, utility and service, for the whole month. Meta labels every delivered message with its category, so your provider can pull the figure, and it is the only way to know whether 1 000 free replies covers you.

03

Shrink the broadcast list before anything else

At 62c a message, one broadcast to 1 000 old enquiries costs about R623 every time you send it. Send to people who have been in touch recently. Under POPIA you may not be allowed to message some of the rest anyway, which we covered in the opt-out registry post.

04

Answer inside 24 hours, in a plain message

Inside the window a plain reply draws on the free 1 000, while a utility template sent as the reply is charged from the first one. After 24 hours you can only reach the member with a paid template. Set automations to answer an inbound question with a normal message, and answer quickly, because slow replies cost gyms more than the message fee.

05

Send ad leads to WhatsApp, and reply the same day

When someone messages you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad, using WhatsApp on a phone rather than the desktop or web version, and you reply inside 24 hours, Meta opens a free entry point window. For up to seven days every message in that conversation is free, marketing included, except Meta Business Agent replies. If you miss the first 24 hours, the free week never opens.

The point

Let the member send the first message.

When a member or lead writes first, your replies for the next 24 hours draw on 1 000 free a month, and a lead from a click-to-WhatsApp ad costs nothing to talk to for up to a week, provided you answer within the first 24 hours. When you write first, every message is a paid template.

Get October's count by category from your provider this week.

Meta can change its rates only on the first day of a quarter, and it gives at least a month's notice before a rate card changes. The next date that can move your bill is 1 January 2027, and October's count is the figure you will compare it against.

A monthly count of replies, reminders and broadcasts, and automations that answer inside the 24 hours instead of after them, is what we build into a gym's system from day one.
