How to Join the Vitality Fitness Network, and What It Pays
Discovery funds the visit and pays your facility directly. What it will not do is turn that visitor into a member.
A Discovery member opens the app on a Tuesday night, searches a map, finds your studio, books the 6am class and pays for it before they arrive. You have never met them. The money is settled by the time they walk through the door. That is the Vitality Fitness network working the way Discovery designed it. For an independent South African gym, a trial visitor who costs nothing to acquire is close to unheard of.
What Discovery hands you is a visit. What you need is a member, and no part of the programme closes that distance for you.
The programme
What the Vitality Fitness network actually is
Discovery's benefit guide for fitness facilities describes it plainly: through Vitality Fitness, smaller boutique gyms and studios can become Vitality partners, and members can find your facility on a map in the Discovery app, book and pay for a class or access pass, and earn Vitality points for the visit.
Three details in that guide matter more than the marketing around them.
The first is that the member pays through Vitality Pay from their Discovery Bank account, and Discovery pays the facility directly. You are not chasing an invoice and you are not carrying the credit risk on a stranger.
The second is the free workout allowance. Discovery's facility guide puts it at up to 24 free workouts a year, two a month, usable at any facility on the network. That allowance is the supply of funded visits, and it is what makes the whole thing move.
The third is a single sentence in Discovery's own list of benefits to you: facilities can convert one-time class or access pass visitors into membership contracts. Discovery states the opportunity and stops there, which is correct of them. Conversion is not their job.
That number moved for 2026. Discovery's Vitality Active and Vitality Premium rate updates for 2026 say a member can earn up to eight free workouts a month on Vitality Fitness: two as a base, and up to six more depending on their Vitality Health status. The healthiest, most active members carry the biggest allowance, which is a useful thing to know about who is walking in.

2026 Vitality updates
Discovery is also widening who is on the network. The 2026 updates name a partnership with Bookamat to bring in more yoga and Pilates studios, and, for the first time, allow Vitality members without a Virgin Active or Planet Fitness membership to book classes at selected Virgin Active clubs through Vitality Fitness. More facilities competing for the same funded visits is the direction this is going.
The cost of entry
What it costs to get in
There is a gate, and it is the reason most independent gyms never get past the idea stage. Discovery's Vitality Fitness page for facilities says you have to integrate with one of its preferred gym management software partners, and it names three: Intensity, Bookamat and Octiv. Those partners charge a monthly service fee. Discovery's own page adds that there are no additional fees or charges if no members visit your facility.
Read that as a business model rather than a perk. Your fixed cost is the software subscription, every month, whether Discovery sends anybody or not. Your revenue is per visit, and it arrives one 45-minute session at a time. A studio that joins, takes the visits and never converts one of them is paying a monthly fee to run somebody else's rewards programme.
Applying is the easy half. Discovery asks for your name, your facility name and type, how many branches you run, your current status with the network and which gym management software you use, sent to [email protected]. Discovery says the network reaches over three million Discovery clients and around 500,000 members already getting active.
A funded visit is a trial that somebody else paid for. It converts at whatever rate your follow-up converts at.
The competitor you are really pricing against
Discovery did not build this out of goodwill towards small studios. A Vitality member with a qualifying Discovery Bank account can get up to 75% off a Virgin Active or Planet Fitness membership, per Discovery's 2026 rate updates. BusinessTech reported the 2026 Virgin Active all-club fee at R1,670 a month, which at that discount lands nearer a quarter of the sticker price for the member.
Meanwhile Statistics South Africa recorded gym fees rising 20.5% between October 2024 and October 2025, in a period when headline consumer inflation was running at 3.6%. Prices in this category are climbing about six times faster than everything else, and the largest chains have a medical scheme absorbing most of that for their best customers.
If you run a boutique gym in Claremont or Northcliff, that is your pricing environment. You are not going to win a straight rand-for-rand fight against a subsidised chain membership. What you can win is the member who wanted coaching and a room where somebody knows their name, and the funded visit is how that member finds you.
The gap
Where the funded visit actually breaks
The check-in is a QR code. Octiv's guide for Vitality-linked studios describes a dynamic code that expires and refreshes every hour, which the member scans to check in and out and earn points: 100 Vitality points for an in-person workout of 30 minutes or more, 50 for an online one.
From the member's side that is elegant. From the gym's side, a scan at the door is the whole interaction unless you build something around it. The visitor trains, gets their points and leaves. Nobody greets them by name, nobody asks what they are training for, and nobody messages them the next morning. On paper you had a lead. In practice you had a stranger use your squat rack.
Four of the five steps in a funded Vitality visit belong to Discovery. The fifth one, the only step that produces revenue after the visit ends, is yours to build.
Before you apply
Five things to sort out first
Choose the software partner on its own merits
Intensity, Bookamat and Octiv are the named route in, and you will run your whole booking, billing and member record on whichever one you pick. Choose it as the system you would want anyway, not as a toll to reach Discovery, because the monthly fee is charged whether a Vitality member ever books or not.
Decide what a first visit is for
A funded visitor who is handed a door code and left alone has had a gym experience identical to Planet Fitness at a quarter of the price. Put them in a class, or with a coach for ten minutes at the start. The visit is your one shot at showing the thing a chain cannot copy.
Capture the person, not the scan
Ask for a name and a mobile number at the desk, and get their permission to use it. Thirty seconds of conversation at check-in is the difference between a visitor you can talk to next week and a line item in a report.
Have an offer sized for somebody with two free visits a month
This person already has a way to train at your gym for nothing. A generic "join today" does not beat free. A six-week programme with a coach, a small group, or a first-month rate that ends on a date gives them a reason to stop spending the allowance and start paying you.
Follow up the next morning, every time
One message within 24 hours, referencing the session they actually did. Then count it: visits in, conversations had, members signed. Without those three numbers you cannot tell whether the software fee is buying you anything.
The point
Discovery pays for the visit. Everything after it is your system.
Every gym on the network gets the same funded walk-in on the same terms. The one that greets them by name, captures a number and messages them the next morning is the one that converts. That is a process you can build before you send the application email, and it works on every walk-in you already get.
Build the follow-up first. Apply second.
So is it worth joining?
If you already have a booking system, a way to capture a visitor and a habit of following up, yes. The visit arrives pre-paid, Discovery carries the payment risk, and you are being introduced to a member who has already proved they will get off the couch for points.
If you do not have those things, joining will cost you a monthly software fee and teach you very little. Fix the follow-up first. It costs nothing, it improves every walk-in and referral you get today, and it is the only part of this that decides whether a funded visit is worth anything to you.
If the follow-up is the part that is missing, that is the system we build. A 30-minute call, and you will leave with the gaps mapped whether you work with us or not.
